The department of Ophthalmology, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram, organised a one-day conference at the hospital titled “Battling Retinal Disorders by Comprehensive Ophthalmologists” in Puttaparthi on Sunday.  

The conference was conducted under the aegis of All India Ophthalmology Society, Academic and Research Committee(AIOS-ARC) and the Andhra Pradesh Ophthalmology Society(APOS).

The conference focused on diagnosis, management and treatment of a wide spectrum of retinal ailments by comprehensive ophthalmologists. The faculty members for the conference were renowned ophthalmologists from acorss the country, who included Dr. Hemanth Murthy, Medical Director, Retina Institute of Karnataka, Dr. Guruprasad Ayachit, Senior Vitreo Retinal Surgeon from MM Joshi Eye Institute Karnataka among others. Being a South Zone conference around 150 delegates from the sourthern states of India attended the conference.   

Speaking at the conference, Sri R J Rathnakar, Trustee, Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, said that Bhagawan Baba had established a number of service projects to benefit the humanity. “To provide medical care Bhagawan Baba established the SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, in a rural area so that healthcare could be within the reach of the indigent rural population. This hospital is a service hospital, which is completely free to all the people and thousands of people have benefited because of this hospital,” he said.  Talking about the department of ophthalmology, Sri Rathnakar said that “When the department of Ophthalmology started in the hospital in 1994 it was one of its kind in the region providing advanced eye treatment, completely free and even after 24 years the department remains one of its kind,” he said. “ And as custodians of  Bhagawan Baba's service projects the Trustees of the SSSCT are fulfilling their duty to help and support the hospital in every way,” Sri Rathnakar added.   

Earlier in his inaugural address, the Director of SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, Dr. Gurumurthy, said that it was Bhagawan Baba’s vision, to establish a completely free hospital with state-of-the-art facilities, at the time when corporatization of medical services had taken healthcare out of the reach of the poor. “Bhagawan Baba wanted to establish a healthcare system where advanced healthcare was given completely free to all irrespective of caste, class, creed, race, religion or nationality, with love and compassion. I think this is a unique hospital in the whole of the world and we have to thank Bhagawan Baba for that,” he said.

Member AIOS ARC South Zone, Dr. Krishna Prasad in his talk called the SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram a temple, “not just because treatment here is done completely free of charge, but more importantly because the charity here is wrapped in dignity”, he said. “Everybody here has such an affable smile and all love to share their love with one other, it is truly a place which is a role model. I am truly moved and feel fortunate that I have come here,” he said.    

In the conference a wide spectrum of topics were covered, which included topics ranging from  ‘Strategies for dealing with diabetic retinopathy’, ‘Cataract and Diabetic Retinopathy’, ‘Age Related Macular Degeneration’, ‘Endophthalmitis’ to ‘Smartphone Retinal Photography’.

The conference was well received by all the delegates who were impressed by the high quality content and the interaction with the distinguished faculty. The delegates were also impressed by the holy atmosphere of Puttaparthi and the noble idea of completely free healthcare as enshrined in the principles of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
