Instrument Society of India, last week conferred acclaimed Materials Scientist and current Vice Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute Of Higher Learning (Deemed to be University) Prof K.B.R.Varma with Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2015 for his outstanding contribution, in the field of Instrumentation in India, at its National Symposium on Instrumentation, Coimbatore.
An outstanding researcher, mentor and innovator, Prof Varma had a distinguished career for over three decades at Materials Research Centre (MRC), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore before taking over as the tenth Vice Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning at Prasanthi Nilayam, a role model Institution set up by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba imparting value based education, free of any cost. At present Prof Varma is spearheading the establishment of a state-of-the-art Research Centre at the Sai University to carry out need-based research in the emerging areas of Materials Science and Technology.
To his credit, Prof Varma has many research publications in national and international journals of high repute, visiting lectures in many national and international universities, membership with many prestigious national and international committees, boards for research and academic planning and monitoring apart from awards, medals and citations. His three-decade-long stint at the IISc was marked with innovative and translational research in the field of Materials Science.
Born at Chintalapalli in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, Prof Varma obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Madras University. He went on to become a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK and at Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Novosibirsk, in the then USSR.
