Sri Sathya Sai Baba's 86th Birthday Celebrations: 30th Convocation of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning
The 30th Convocation of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning was observed in the Sai Kulwant Hall today. The Chief Guest to the Convocation, Prof. P. Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and other dignitaries including former vice chancellors, academicians, members of the academic council and others took their seats on either side of the ceremonial Chair kept for the Founder Chancellor, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
The morning function commenced at 1030 hrs. with the Institute Brass Band leading the procession from Yajur Mandir to the Hall, with a student carrying a sceptre and the Registrar carrying the Ceremonial Mace. The function began with Veda chanting after which the Vice-Chancellor started the formal proceedings with the voice of the Founder Chancellor declaring the convocation open to rapturous applause from the audience.
The Vice Chancellor reiterated the Institute’s resolve to work towards fulfilling Bhagawan’s mission following His ideals. Making a mention about the unavailability of the current Chancellor, Justice (Retd.) PN Bhagavati, owing to ill-health, he extended a cordial welcome to the entire assembly into the morning’s function. He gave a brief account of the Institute's achievements in the ongoing academic year and introduced the Chief Guest, after which the graduates for the year were presented to the Founder Chancellor. This was followed by the Institute Oath, that was administered to the students by the Vice Chancellor.
Gold medals to various degrees were then presented to the students by the Vice Chancellor. Twenty two students were presented with various gold medals for academic excellence, instituted in honour of distinguished personalities.
The Chief Guest’s Convocation address followed, wherein he hailed the Institute as a unique one that evolved over three decades under Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's able guidance with discipline as its hallmark.
Elucidating on the subject on how to become successful, the learned speaker stressed on the need to work hard, irrespective of failures. Failure is a common phenomenon, that one should treat with equanimity, and overcome with discipline, hard work, commitment and imagination. He gave the example of the riches-to-rags story of JK Rowling of 'Harry Potter' fame and concluded by wishing the convocating students all success.
This was followed by the Founder Chancellor's recorded speech on the importance of combining secular education with spiritual knowledge, of being patriotic and serve one's motherland and of facing life's challenges with courage.
The programme ended with the singing of the National Anthem and the retreat of the Band and procession back to Yajur Mandir.
In the evening there was a Music Concert -- Tala Vadya Katcheri, by Karaikkudi Mani and Party
