PhacoRet 2015, Phacoemulsification and its Retinal Complications - Day 2

Prasanthigram- 27 09 2015;  The second day of the PhacoRet 2015, a conference organized by the Ophthalmology department of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram, began with a symposium on “Retinal Complications of Phocoemulsification”. The endeavor of the symposium was to throw light on the best methods available for surgeons for patients with retinal complications after phacoemulsification. The second session of the day focused on prevention and treatment of infections of the eye.

Phacoemulsification refers to modern cataract surgery in which the eye's cataract afflicted internal lens is broken into small pieces with an ultrasonic hand piece and taken out of the eye and a new artificial lens is put in its place. With this method the cut required to remove the lens and put the new lens is much smaller than ordinary cataract surgery and therefore the recovery is must faster.

The conference focusses on the process of phacoemulsification and complications arising due to the surgery for the eye’s retina.

The faculty members and the delegates who attended the conference were all praise for the conference.

Dr. M. S. Ravindra, President Bangalore Ophthalmology Society mentioned that the conference was a gift to the people who attended it. “The topics were of immense value to all even to the senior level practitioners. In fact, what the participants of the conference have learnt here they can straight away put into practice,” Dr. Ravindra said. Speaking about the concept of totally free healthcare of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Dr. Ravindra said that it is expected that free healthcare can be provided only by Government institutions, but Bhagawan Baba has shown that even a non-government organization can do it. “I have come here earlier, the hospital has the blessings of Bhagawan Baba. “The hospital feels so vibrant, you can feel Bhagawan Baba’s presence here,” he said.

Another faculty member, Dr. Suven Bhattacharjee, Director, Nayan Eye Hospital, Kolkata, said that the conference had something for everybody. “ The conference was rich in content and whatever the level of the ophthalmologist be it a trainee, a Junior Consultant or the faculty, there was something for everybody,” Dr. Bhattacharjee said. “ The sessions were interactive and we had great discussions during the conference,”  he added. Speaking about the service being rendered by SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram Dr. Bhattacharjee said that whenever, we hear about free healthcare, we think that it would be of low quality, but free healthcare at world class standard is something I have seen after coming to SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, he said.

A delegate Dr. Pratibha, Senior Resident from Government Medical College, Nizamabad, mentioned that even minutest aspects of Phacoemulsification surgery were discussed during the conference, which helped her to learn a lot. “There are many small steps which generally don’t find mention, but even those steps were discussed here,” she said.  Coming to the hospital for the first time, she said that in one word her experience was ‘awesome’.

Another delegate, Dr. Deva Prasad G, Consultant, from Modi Eye Hospital, Bangalore said that the conference was high on content and was extremely well planned. “The conference covered topics ranging from the basic to the advanced in a well-planned manner. The highlight of the conference was the live surgery demonstration,” he said. Echoing his feelings about the totally healthcare being provided by Bhagawan Baba’s institutions, Dr. Prasad said that free healthcare is what is most needed in this day and age of commercialized healthcare.
